What is Self Myofascial Release?
We like to think that SMR is like a deep tissue massage, the only difference is that you can do it no matter where you are. SMR is our way of combating bad posture. It helps you gain mobility, improve muscular function and develop body awareness. You can practice SMR with the aid of our trainers as well as in the comfort of your own home.
How Does It Work?
Self Myofascial Release may seem like an overwhelming term to understand at first, but chances are you already understand two of these three words already. The new term here is “myofascial”. Anything that isn’t a bone, organ, or muscle is surrounded by a spider web of connective tissue known as fascia. Myo just means muscle, and myofascia is the connective tissue that surrounds muscle fibers. With the lack of mobility (like sitting too long) or relaxation (such as overused muscles), fascia becomes stiff and begins to hold tension patterns often ending in what’s commonly known as a knot. SMR works because compression combined with deep breathing increases blood flow to myofascia, resulting in increased mobility, decreased joint pain, or a melted knot. We use a variety of tools to get the job done including, but not limited to:
- Foam Rollers
- Personalized Fitsom PVC Pipes
- Lacrosse Balls
- Golf Balls
